How to perform Umrah, step by step

Read it once before you fly and once on the plane. Each step opens to the full detail, the dua that belongs to it, and what tends to go wrong at that particular point. Tawaf and Sa'i have drawings, because those two are the ones people cannot picture from a paragraph.

  1. Prepare before the miqat

    Ghusl, trim your nails and hair, put fragrance on your body but not on the cloth, and change into ihram.

    • Perform ghusl if you can. Wudu is sufficient if you cannot.
    • Trim nails, remove unwanted hair, comb your hair. None of it is permitted once you are in ihram, so this is your last chance for several days.
    • Men wear two unstitched white cloths: izar round the waist, rida over the shoulders. No underwear, nothing stitched, head uncovered.
    • Women wear ordinary modest clothing. There is no special garment. Face and hands stay uncovered in ihram according to the majority, so no niqab and no gloves.
    • Fragrance goes on your body before you enter ihram. Not on the cloth.

    Bring two sets

    The first one gets soaked, either at a Zamzam cooler or in rain, and a wet rida for the rest of the day is genuinely miserable. Two sets cost about SAR 60 in any shop near the Haram.

  2. Enter ihram and make your intention

    State the intention for Umrah, begin the Talbiyah, and from that moment the restrictions apply.

  3. Enter Masjid al-Haram

    Right foot first, the dua for entering a mosque, and stop the Talbiyah once you begin tawaf.

  4. Tawaf, seven circuits

    Seven anticlockwise circuits, starting and finishing at the Black Stone corner, with the Kaaba on your left the whole way.

  5. Two rak'ahs at Maqam Ibrahim

    Two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if there is space, and anywhere in the mosque if there is not.

  6. Drink Zamzam

    Drink your fill and make dua. Zamzam is drunk for whatever one asks for.

  7. Sa'i, seven lengths

    Safa to Marwah is one. Marwah back to Safa is two. Seven finishes at Marwah.

  8. Halq or taqsir, shave or trim

    Men shave the head or trim all of it. Women cut about a fingertip's length from the ends.

  9. Your Umrah is complete

    The restrictions lift. Change, eat, sleep, and then go back to the Haram.
